Investigation Continues Into Dollar General Fire; Assistance Identifying Possible Witnesses
CARROLL COUNTY, MD (September 4, 2022) - The investigation continues into the cause of a fire that ravaged a Dollar General store in Hampstead yesterday evening that caused two and a half million dollars in damages and took over 100 firefighters to bring under control. Investigators worked into the early morning hours and are asking for help identifying two possible witnesses.
Just after 5:00 p.m. yesterday, Hampstead Volunteer Fire Company and surrounding fire departments, along with Hampstead Police Department, responded to the Dollar General at 834 South Main Street for a reported building fire. Firefighters were on the scene within minutes and quickly upgraded the fire to two alarms, bringing firefighters from Carroll, Baltimore, and Pennsylvania to the scene. It took over one hour to bring the fire under control, and no injuries were reported.
Deputy State Fire Marshals, along with agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Hampstead Police Department, worked together and are asking for assistance in identifying two people who may have seen something before the fire was discovered.
Investigators believe the couple may be a mother and son and arrived just before 5:00 p.m. in a dark, possibly green, early model GMC Safari van.
