State Fire Marshal Notifies Garrett County                   Residents and Businesses of Changes

GARRETT COUNTY, MD (July 13, 2022) - State Fire Marshal Brian S. Geraci is notifying Garrett County residents and business owners of the creation of the Garrett County Office of the Fire Marshal.

Upon the conclusion of a special session held by the Garrett County Commissioners on July 11, 2022, the ordinance to appoint a Garrett County Fire Marshal was approved. Both agencies met and agreed upon a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Garrett County has agreed to conduct preventive inspections and code enforcement of all occupancies other than state-owned properties, health care, foster and day care homes, educational facilities, and all public firework displays allowed under the Maryland State Fire Prevention Code.

Garrett County Fire Marshal's Office will be responsible for enforcing the State Fire Prevention Code, which a local jurisdiction cannot weaken. Inspections include the installation of fire sprinklers, fire alarm systems, and fire exits in multi-family homes. As the Deep Creek area housing market continues to evolve, the office will ensure the compliance of retrofitting fire sprinklers in homes when the type of use and occupancy changes, such as when a single-family home is purchased for the intended use of a rental property.

A third-party vendor will conduct fire protection plans, architectural plans, mechanical plans, and code analysis reviews to ensure that systems are designed following contract requirements and applicable building and fire codes.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal will continue to be responsible for investigating the origin and cause of all fires, explosions, explosive devices, and services performed by the Bomb Squad.

"I welcome Fire Marshal Cieslarczyk to Maryland and look forward to working with him to assure the safety and well-being of everyone in Garrett County. Our Deputy State Fire Marshals will continue to respond and work with our public safety partners to determine the cause of each fire and mitigate explosive hazards," State Fire Marshal Brian S. Geraci said.

Since the agency's inception in 1894, the Office of the State Fire Marshal has served Maryland's residents, business owners, and visitors. These services are provided by a staff of nearly seventy fire safety inspectors, fire protection engineers, investigators, and professional staff members.
