Insurance Fraud Case Leads to Arrest
CAROLINE COUNTY, December 15, 2020 - After a lengthy investigation, Deputies of the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office have charged a Caroline County woman for intentionally setting fire to her house. The fire, which occurred at 3835 Seippes Road in Federalsburg, was reported to 911 a passer by around 5:11 am on June 15th, 2020. The house was completely destroyed and caused an estimated $215,000 in damages. The owner, Caitlin Hudson (45), was quickly identified as a suspect in the investigation, which revealed she intended to make a fraudulent insurance claim after the fire. A Caroline County Grand Jury indicted Hudson on five charges, including Arson First Degree, Malicious Burning First Degree, Malicious Burning with the Intent to Defraud, False Statements to Insurance and Reckless Endangerment.
The investigation revealed Hudson may have been residing in Delaware after the fire occurred. The Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office assisted Maryland State Fire Marshal's in locating Hudson. On December 14th around noon, Hudson was located off of McCabe Rd in Selbyville, Delaware. She was taken into custody without incident and transported to Troop 4. She was processed and quickly seen before a judge, which allowed extradition to Maryland. Subsequently, Hudson was transferred to Caroline County Detention in Denton, where she is currently being held.
If convicted, Hudson faces up to 60 years of imprisonment and/or $75,000 in fines.
