Deputy State Fire Marshal Serves Criminal Summons in Vehicle Arson Case
GARRETT COUNTY, October 30, 2019 - The Western Regional Office of the State Fire Marshal issued a criminal summons today in connection to a vehicle arson that occurred on October 8, 2019.
Mr. Dwight David Wilhelm, Jr., 19, of Lonaconing, is charged with 2nd degree arson and faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and/or $30,000 in fines if found guilty.
Around 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 8, the Grantsville Volunteer Fire Department reported to a 2006 GMC 2500 pickup truck that was on fire at I-68 westbound, between mile markers 15 and 16. The vehicle was registered to Wilhelm, Jr., and his father, both of whom were not present at the scene. Fire Scene Investigators determined that cause of the fire, which originated in the passenger compartment, to be incendiary. It was later determined that Wilhelm, Jr. was operating the truck at the time it broke down. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $3,000.
The Garrett County Commissioner's Office issued a criminal summons for Wilhelm, Jr., which he was served at 10:00 a.m. this morning by a Deputy State Fire Marshal, without incident.
