DEPUTY STATE FIRE MARSHALS REQUEST ASSISTANCE AFTER FIREWORKS WERE PLACED IN MAILBOXES

CARROLL COUNTY, MD  (March 25, 2019) - Deputy State Fire Marshals are requesting the public's assistance in identifying a suspect(s)  after a series of mailbox explosions in the Manchester area were discovered yesterday.

On March 24, 2019, at approximately 8:45 a.m. Carroll County Sheriff's Office requested the assistance of the Office of the State Fire Marshal after a homeowner in the 3600 block of Lineboro Road discovered their roadside mailbox damaged. Deputy State Fire Marshals responded, conducted an investigation and determined a consumer grade firework, most likely an M-80, was placed inside and detonated. As a matter of routine follow-up, investigators canvassed the immediate area and did not locate any further damaged mailboxes.

Later in the evening, at approximately 5:30 p.m. Manchester Police Department requested the Office of the State Fire Marshal after a homeowner in the 3200 block of Keating Court returned home after a weekend vacation and discovered his mailbox was destroyed as well. Investigators concluded the same type of explosive was used. During the course of the investigation, witnesses reported observing an unknown make or model pick-up truck in the area and quickly fleeing the scene. The truck was described as "low profile," green in color with rectangular headlights. The witness reported hearing another explosion in the area Bachman Road as well as one in the area of York Street and Main Street. Investigators canvassed the Bachman Road neighborhood and did not locate any sign of an explosion, however, they recovered the remains of an M-80 type device at York Street and Main Street.

Deputy State Fire Marshals later learned of another possible mailbox damaged by an explosion in the area of 3900 Water Tank Road in Manchester. Investigators responded to the area and recovered the remains of another M-80 type of device.

Anyone with information regarding the incidents or observed the described vehicle, is asked to contact the Northeast Regional Office at (410) 836-4844 or Manchester Police Department at (410) 239-6900.
