VICTIM IDENTIFIED IN SYKESVILLE FIRE; CAUSE UNDER INVESTIGATION
CARROLL COUNTY, MD (December 24, 2018) – A joint investigation is underway between the Office of the State Fire Marshal and Carroll County Sheriff’s Office after a mid-morning fire claimed the life of a Sykesville woman.
At approximately 9:30 a.m. Sykesville-Freedom Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched for a reported smoke investigation at 934-B Marimich Court in Sykesville. Upon arrival, firefighters were advised by family members who also reside within the Piney Ridge Apartment complex they had gained access to the apartment after hearing smoke alarms sound; however, had to retreat due to heavy smoke conditions. Upon entering the apartment, firefighters discovered a fire and a victim within the bedroom. Deputy State Fire Marshals and Carroll County Sheriff’s Office detectives have confirmed Leslie C. Geisendaffer, age 47, as the victim. Geisendaffter was the sole occupant of the apartment at the time of the fire.
Investigators have been on scene throughout the day conducting and origin and cause investigation. The preliminary investigation has determined the fire originated within the bedroom while the cause remains under investigation.
The victim has been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner where the cause and manner of death will be determined.
The one-alarm incident brought 40 firefighters to the scene and took approximately 30 minutes to bring under control.
A joint investigation between the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the primary local jurisdiction is standard operating procedure whenever a fatal fire occurs.
