FINKSBURG FIRE CLAIMS LIFE
CARROLL COUNTY, MD (May 23, 2018) – A joint investigation is underway between Deputy State Fire Marshals of the Office of the State Fire Marshal and detectives with Carroll County Sheriffs Office after a fatal fire late last night which claimed one life.
On May 22, 2018 at approximately 11:30 p.m. the Reese Volunteer Fire Company and surrounding fire companies were dispatched for a dwelling fire in the 2000 Block of Old Westminster Pike in Finksburg.
Upon arrival, firefighters were advised an adult female was possibly located within a second floor bedroom. Firefighters made entry and rescued the victim however they subsequently discovered injuries incompatible with life. The victim was later pronounced deceased by an on scene EMS crew.
Investigators have been on scene throughout the night conducting and origin and cause investigation and preliminary reports have indicated a total of (5) other people including adults and children were in the two-story, wood frame house when they discovered a fire within a bedroom of the victim. An attempt to extinguish the fire was made by two of the adults while other the other occupants exited the home safely. The adult occupants re-entered the home and again attempted to locate the victim and discovered the same bedroom door was locked and heavy smoke coming from under the door. Attempts to gain access to the bedroom was made to no avail and the occupants had to exit the home for their own safety.
The adult victim adult has been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner where the victim will be positively identified and the cause and manner of death determined.
The one-alarm incident brought 50 firefighters to the scene and took approximately 30 minutes to bring under control.
A joint investigation between the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the primary local jurisdiction is standard operating procedure whenever a fatal fire occurs.
