PERRYVILLE CONDOMINIUM FIRE UPDATE
CECIL COUNTY, MD (April 1, 2018) – The fire being investigated by the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office, is still under investigation. However, improperly discarded smoking materials cannot be ruled out as the cause. The three-alarm fire that occurred at 18 Owens Landing Court in Perryville displaced 24 people.
The fire that was reported at 2:34 a.m. started on the third floor balcony of Unit 18-C. Three occupants from various condominium units were transported to area hospitals for non-life threatening injuries. All of those occupants have been treated and released from the hospital.
Nearly 100 firefighters responded from Cecil, Harford and Perry Point Veterans Affairs Dept. Due to the unique positioning of the building being approximately 55 feet from the Susquehanna River, Fire Boats from Susquehanna Hose Company in Harford County and Charlestown Fire Company in Cecil County were also dispatched to the scene. There was no access for the fire trucks to effectively position themselves on the river side of the building. Therefore, the ability to have the boats respond and effectively position themselves in this situation allowed for the protection of three other condominium buildings resulting in the damage amounts of those buildings to be significantly lower. Without their response to this incident, a much high property loss would have been most probable and in turn could have put many more lives at risk.
The involved building is considered a complete loss with extensive heat damage to three other buildings in the complex. The current estimated damages to structures and contents is approximately $7,500,000. The condominium buildings have smoke alarms in each unit, a fire alarm throughout the building and are equipped with fire sprinklers.
