Fire Alarm / Sprinkler Status: Fire Alarm - Present and operated Sprinkler - Present - did not activate due to the fire originating on the exterior balcony and extending into the attic of the building

Area of Origin: Third floor apartment balcony (Unit 301)
Preliminary Cause: Accidental - due to discarded fireplace ashes
Additional Information: Ms. Wilson woke up to the smell of smoke and upon checking the source discovered a fire on her balcony. The fire quickly spread into the attic of the building. Wilson & Brown, his son and dog were able to escape and alert the other tenants by activating the fire alarm. Firefighters from Abingdon rescued (2) occupants. Everyone was able to escape without injury. A total of (15) people are displaced and are being assisted by Red Cross.
