National Safety Month: Making Safety a Daily Habit

June is National Safety Month, a time to raise awareness about preventable injuries and encourage safer behaviors at work, at home, and while traveling.

For MDOT, National Safety Month is an opportunity to highlight the role transportation safety plays in our daily lives. Every trip we take, whether by car, transit, bicycle, on foot, by air, or by sea, depends on a shared commitment to safety.

Transportation connects Marylanders to jobs, schools, healthcare, family, and opportunity. Safe travel helps make those connections possible.

Creating a safer transportation network requires a shared commitment from everyone who uses it. From drivers and transit riders to cyclists and pedestrians, every traveler has a role to play in keeping Maryland's transportation network safe.

Simple actions can make a meaningful difference:

  • Wear your seat belt every trip, every time.
  • Slow down and stay alert in work zones.
  • Pay attention near tracks, stations, and transit platforms.
  • Obey traffic laws and posted speed limits.
  • Watch for pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, and other vulnerable road users.

When people make safety-conscious decisions, they help create safer roads, transit systems, and communities for everyone.

This shared responsibility is at the heart of MDOT's Serious About Safety initiative, which encourages Marylanders to make safety a priority wherever their journey takes them. Through education, outreach, and community engagement, the initiative promotes safe travel behaviors and raises awareness of the steps we can all take to prevent crashes and injuries.

The message behind National Safety Month and Serious About Safety is simple: safety is everyone's responsibility. By making thoughtful, safety-conscious choices every day, we can help protect ourselves, our families, and our communities, while keeping Maryland moving safely.

Serious About Safety Monthly Spotlight

As part of MDOT’s Serious About Safety initiative, this month’s spotlight features a message from Maryland Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller.

Lieutenant Governor Miller reinforces the Moore-Miller Administration’s commitment to safety and highlights the importance of protecting the men and women who work every day to keep Maryland’s transportation network moving. She reminds drivers that roadway workers face risks each time they enter a work zone and that everyone has a role to play in helping keep them safe.

Take a moment to watch this month’s Serious About Safety spotlight, and join us in helping keep Maryland’s transportation network safe for all.
