Celebrating 27 Years Of The Americans With Disabilities Act

President Bush signs ADA into law

In celebration of the 27th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Maryland Department of Disabilities will host a traveling disAbility History Tour throughout Maryland during July and August of 2017.

Advocacy: A History of People Speaking Up for Themselves will be on loan from the Museum of disAbility History in New York.  This display traces the advocacy movement from early educational facilities to the development of organizations established for and by individuals with disabilities. This includes the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Maryland groups have a chance not only to learn from this traveling presentation but        contribute to the record of disability history in Maryland!

Groups are invited to:

  • Design a banner depicting the history of disability rights advocacy in Maryland
  • Submit your banner design by May 15, 2017
  • One banner design will be selected for presentation with the Traveling disAbility History Display

The selected banner designers will be invited to Annapolis in July to kick off the Traveling disAbility History Campaign and to receive recognition from Governor Hogan’s office and the Maryland Department of Disabilities.

Stay tuned for more information on the traveling display and a listing of host locations throughout Maryland soon!  Find out more at this link

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

Governor Hogan declared March Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in Maryland.  This designation allows our state to recognize the unlimited potential of all our citizens, including those with developmental disabilities, to live, work, and thrive in our communities. Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is also an opportunity to recognize the importance of ensuring inclusive environments with equal access to communication, education, employment, housing, transportation, and public accommodation.

Make sure to follow the Maryland Department of Disabilities all month for features highlighting the contributions of those with developmental disabilities to our state!
