What’s the Buzz: All About Pollinators
Pollinators come in all shapes and sizes. Pollination occurs when animals, water, or wind carry pollen from flower to flower or within flowers. Animal pollinators are responsible for pollinating over 80% of the world’s flowering plants.
In Maryland, the most important group of pollinators are bees. More than 400 species of bees can be found in the state along with more than 150 butterfly species. In addition to bees and butterflies, other Maryland pollinators include ants, beetles, flies, moths, wasps, and the ruby-throated hummingbird. Learn more about Maryland's pollinators.

Wild Acres: Creating Backyard Habitat
Maryland’s Wild Acres is a voluntary program which encourages Maryland citizens to create backyard wildlife habitat. The Wild Acres program offers fact sheets on how landowners can enhance their habitat for wildlife by creating food, water and shelter resources.
Proper habitat for wildlife includes an area which supplies food, water, shelter and a place to raise their young. Because wild animals need areas of suitable habitat, your backyard, schoolyard or development can be designed to be a part of an important network of "Wild Acres" used by Maryland's wildlife.
