Easement Protects 122 Acres in Baltimore County
Stiles Colwill and Jonathan Gargiulo have granted to Maryland Environmental Trust a conservation easement on their 122-acre farm in Baltimore County. The easement retires the development right for this property. Historically named "Halcyon Farm," the property boasts views of two historic homes, one built in 1750 as part of the original property granted to John Ford family and the other located along Greenspring Avenue which was built in 1850. For more historic information see the documentation provided by the Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties number BA-154.
The property consists of 64 acres of pasture and 50 acres of mixed hardwood forest most of which is visible from various points along Greenspring Avenue. The easement will also protect nearly 2,200 feet of Dipping Pond Run and associated tributaries with forest buffers ultimately protecting a significant section of the Jones Falls watershed from erosion and pollution.

Riparian Buffer Care and Maintenance Calendar
Riparian forest buffers are considered the ‘last line of defense for our streams’ by trapping and transforming nutrients and sediments before they enter our waterways as harmful runoff. The Riparian Buffer Care and Maintenance Calendar provides guidelines for supporting early-stage development of recently planted riparian forest buffers (established less than 10 years). For more information visit read the Buffer Care Calendar.

Forest Pests in Maryland
Invasive plants and insects can be very problematic for forest landowners. From vines that take over disturbed areas, blanketing forest edges and girdling trees, to insects that defoliate and infect trees with pathogens, these invaders not only decimate the natural ecosystem but they are difficult to control and can be expensive to eradicate. The Maryland Forest Service has compiled informational fact sheets on many invasive species that are giving homeowners and landowners management problems. For more information about invasive plants and insects visit the Forest Pests web page.
