Park PROs: Making Tea with Hemlock Reishi Mushrooms

Let nature inspire your creativity during this casual outdoor painting activity with Ranger Hannah. This program is best suited for adults and older kids. No pets in the garden please. Basic art supplies will be provided. This program will take place inside the Lake House if it rains.

Weed or Wildflower?

Want to help preserve our regional biodiversity? Bring your work gloves, kneeling pads, favorite weeding tools, and some elbow grease to remove unwanted plants from the garden.
As you work, you’ll learn how to identify common weeds and why protecting native plants is so critical for wildlife. Meet at the native plant garden near the Lake House. Please bring your own water bottle, insect repellent, and sunscreen.

Senior Rangers - Week Four

Noon-1:30 p.m. at the Lake House
New Germany State Park will host Senior Rangers, a new series of programs designed for adults ages 55-plus, held every Thursday from May 30 through June 27.
Programs will include mushroom growing, fishing, native plant identification, birding, and foraging.
The programs are free (supported by the Friends of New Germany State Park), but donations are welcome. Registration is required for each weekly program and space is limited. To register, please email noah.manges@maryland.gov.

Park PROs - Pups in Parks

Join Ranger Julia for this Park PROs program and learn how to safely and responsibly enjoy State Parks with your four-legged best friend. Discussion will include where to find the best pet-friendly amenities, how to keep your pet safe in the outdoors, and tips to maximize fun for everyone! Well behaved, leashed dogs are welcome to attend this outdoor program, which will conclude with an optional easy pack walk along the Turnpike Trail to enjoy the seasonal sights (and smells!) of New Germany. Please ensure that all participating pups have their rabies vaccination information readily available.

Turtle Week Hike and Craft

This will be one of a series of tree talks, with each focusing on different tree species.

Gather outside the Lake House for a history talk with Ranger Noah. Take a step back in time and learn about the history of New Germany State Park, from the early German settlers to the park you see today. This history talk will be offered periodically throughout the summer.

Black Bear Q&A

Stop by the black bear display at the Nature Center with all your bear country questions. Ranger Noah and Ranger Hannah will provide you with some helpful tips to avoid bear encounters while visiting the park, as well as provide you with an opportunity to see and feel a real bear fur and skull. Unless otherwise noted, events are held rain or shine, free and fun for all ages; donations are always welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Dress for the weather/activity, wear sunscreen and insect repellent, bring plenty of water and snacks, and check for ticks.
