New Easement in Baltimore County Protects 32 Acres of Forest
In February, the Bowden family donated a conservation easement to Maryland Environmental Trust on 32 acres of forest adjacent to Gunpowder Falls State Park in Baltimore County. The easement protects forest (8 acres are newly planted native tree species), two unnamed tributaries of Little Falls, forest dwelling bird species habitat, and land within Maryland's biodiversity conservation network, BioNet. MET celebrates with gratitude this nature loving and civic minded family who chose to protect their forest for the benefit of our great state!

Southern Maryland Conservation Alliance Initiated Effort to Conserve 500+ acres in Prince George's County
The Southern Maryland Conservation Alliance (SMCA) is a collaboration of land trusts and conservation groups operating in the five-county “Southern Maryland” region applying a landscape-scale approach to conserving the region’s significant natural and cultural resources. Maryland Environmental Trust, working with American Chestnut Land Trust (ACLT), played a leading role in heading up SMCA in 2021. MET, ACLT, and 17 other organizations make up the core partners of this Alliance.
Over the past two years SMCA played a critical role in advocating for the protection of a more than 500-acre forested tract owned by the Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital chapter near Marlton in Prince George’s County. Also, our efforts were supported by a letter campaign from the Prince George's County Chapter of the Sierra Club and a petition from a local group of Girl Scouts. These efforts paid off in a huge way last month, as Prince George’s County Parks and Recreation acquired the property for conservation parkland. Click on this link for a timeline of SMCA partner activities leading up to this parkland purchase.

Tree Planting Workshop in the Heart of Maryland
As part of promoting the State's effort to plant five million trees on public and private lands in Maryland by 2031, MET and Catoctin Land Trust hosted a free event on February 28 for private landowners in Frederick and Washington Counties, including conservation easement landowners, to learn about tree-planting and stream restoration opportunities for their properties. The event was held at Fox Haven Farm and Learning Center in Jefferson, MD. About 40 landowners gathered to talk with representatives from the Maryland Forest Service, Stream-Link Education, Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and Frederick County Creek ReLeaf about the tree planting options available.
