Caroline County Easement Protects 33 Acres of Forest
The Carter family in Caroline County recently donated a conservation easement on their 33 acres of forest along the Choptank River. These nature loving and civic minded landowners chose to protect their nearly untouched forest for the benefit of our great state. MET is grateful to the Carters for conserving this ecologically significant forest!

Conservation Easement Donations to MET
As Marylanders, we know how lucky we are to call this state home. From the forested mountains of Garrett County to the shores of the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland has natural areas and scenic beauty rivaled by few states in the nation. You can play an important role in protecting Maryland's lands by agreeing to protect your land with a conservation easement.
By protecting your land with a conservation easement, you are committing to conserving scenic vistas and wildlife habitat, ensuring the future viability of farming and forestry, and conserving the rural character and natural beauty of communities all across Maryland. You can accomplish all of this without giving up ownership of the land you love. Visit MET’s FAQs page for answers to commonly asked questions about conservation easements.
If you or someone you know is interested in learning more please contact MET’s Easement Program staff, Ann Gutierrez Carlson or Matthew Ludington.

Get Your Backyard Buffer Packet Before They are Gone
The Maryland Forest Service and the Potomac Watershed Partnership present the Backyard Buffers program, designed to assist homeowners who have a waterway on or adjacent to their property to create a streamside buffer of native trees and shrubs.
Backyard Buffers packet reservations are typically taken during the month of March, with bags available for pickup at a designated local site in time for the spring planting season. A limited number of bags are available each year on a first-come, first-served basis, so please call ahead. Learn more.

Maryland Riparian Buffer Care Calendar
Riparian forest buffers are considered the ‘last line of defense for our streams’ by trapping and transforming nutrients and sediments before they enter our waterways as harmful runoff. The Maryland Riparian Buffer Care and Maintenance Calendar includes guidelines for supporting early stage development of recently planted buffers <10 years post-establishment. Learn more.
