Paw Paws at Bohemia

Pawpaws at Bohemia!

Fall is here, which means fruit is ripe on native pawpaw trees. Bohemia River State Park is fortunate enough to be home to many pawpaw trees. What is a pawpaw, and why are we so excited about them at Bohemia? We're glad you asked!

The pawpaw (Asimina triloba) is a small understory tree native to North America. It produces soft-skinned, pale green fruit which can fit neatly into the palm of your hand. Pawpaws taste like a mixture of tropical fruits, with a predominant flavor of banana. Native plants like these are healthy for our local ecosystems because established food webs are maintained when native plants flourish. Our soil systems, bugs, birds, and larger animals are stronger and healthier as a result.

Another reason to be excited about pawpaw trees is because they are the exclusive host plant for the zebra swallowtail butterfly (Protographium marcellus). These showy black-and-white-striped insects spend the entire caterpillar portion of their lives in pawpaw trees, and are a common sight at Bohemia River State Park.

We hope to see you at Bohemia, enjoying the fall!
