Delmarva Woodland Stewards Program
Woodland owners who would like to learn more about using stewardship practices like prescribed fire and forest management to improve wildlife habitat and water quality are invited to apply to become Delmarva Woodland Stewards. This program is based on the Maryland Woodland Stewards program, which, since 1990, has trained 473 Maryland residents owning more than 70,000 acres to practice sound forest management that can make wildlife healthier, more diverse, and more abundant. These stewards have in turn taught thousands of other woodland owners these skills and concepts. The application deadline is August 15, 2023. Learn more.

Beech Leaf Disease
Our native beech as well as non-native varieties, such as European beech that is commonly used in landscaping and in gardens, are susceptible to beech leaf disease (BLD). BLD is a foliar disease affecting leaves of beech trees. The Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Forest Pest Management section has been actively surveying forests statewide for the disease since 2019. The disease has not yet been documented in Maryland. However, it has been found in neighboring Pennsylvania counties of western Maryland and one county in northern Virginia adjacent to southern Maryland. Learn more.

“Five Million Trees, Please”: Maryland Rolls Out ‘5 Million Trees’ Initiative
For the next eight years the Maryland Forest Service will feature a familiar refrain: 5 Million Trees! The 5 Million Trees Initiative was mandated by legislation, the Tree Solutions Now Act of 2021. Part of this legislation included a historic directive to plant 5 million native trees on public and private land by 2031. These trees are in addition to standard state planting levels–so with more than six million people living in Maryland, at least one tree will be planted for each resident by 2031. Learn more.
