BEAVERS!

Sharp-eyed park visitor Rick Ewing captured these images of two beavers who have taken up residence in one of Fair Hill's waterways. We're grateful he shared his photos with us, and offered permissions for us to include them in this publication.

Thank you, Rick!

Did you know?

  • Beavers build dams to create areas of deeper water. The deep water helps beavers hide from predators.
  • Deeper water created by beaver dams serves as a nursery for fish, and as habitat for approximately 80% of animal species.
  • The deep pools are cooler at the bottom. Water seeps into the ground and into the surrounding area, and as it evaporates it cools the air. Air in areas around beaver complexes can be cooler by up to 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Additionally, the pools are a good source of groundwater.
  • Pools created by beavers insulate the surrounding area from the burning of wildfires, and from drought.
  • For these reasons and more, it is important to preserve the work of beavers as we seek to combat the effects of global warming.

We're happy and proud to have these animals at the park!
