Harriet Tubman Day: March 11, 2023
10:30 a.m.: The Cambridge-South Dorchester High School "Valhalla Voices"
Kick off the celebration with the "Valhalla Voices" under the direction of Mrs. Melissa Wise. This inspiring performance is sure to stay with you throughout the day. Please meet in our theater.
11 a.m.: From Africa to America: The Advent of Negro Spirituals
Join Ranger Lawson Nwakudo from the National Park Service as he explores the history of spirituals and how they serve as the cultural undergirding of African American music. Please meet in our multi-purpose room.
Noon: Tubman's Tree: Harriet Tubman and the Eastern Red Cedar
Join Ranger Collin Higgins from the Maryland Park Service and discover the majesty of the red cedar and the role this tree species played in Harriet Tubman's life. Also enjoy the opportunity to make your own leaf rubbing of the eastern red cedar here at our park! Please meet in our multi-purpose room.
1 p.m.: Unknown Maryland Freedom Seekers from the Eastern Shore
Alexander Helmsley, Moses Viney, and Isaac Mason, all unknown heroes from the Eastern Shore, are examples of the courageous people who took the initiative to escape slavery. They used their intelligence and ingenuity to escape slave catchers and, after taking many risks, to settle at their destinations. Join Jenny Masur as she shares the stories of these unsung heroes. Please meet in our multi-purpose room. Brought to you by The National Park Service's National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.
1 p.m.: Meet Harriet Tubman
Enjoy a memorable interpretation of Harriet Tubman through a reenactment by the Official Griot for the State of Maryland, Janice Curtis Greene, and experience a historical journey that you will never forget. Please meet in our theater.
2 p.m.: Visions of Freedom
Born 201 years ago on Maryland's Eastern Shore, Harriet Tubman was a conductor of the Underground Railroad, a Civil War scout, nurse, and spy, and one of the greatest freedom fighters in our nation’s history. After the screening of the film "Visions of Freedom," join us for a question and answer session with Maryland Park Ranger Angela Crenshaw. Please meet in our theater.
Noon-3 p.m.: Family Activities
Join Ranger Michael Fray at noon in the library for a reading of the children's book "An Apple for Harriet Tubman" by Glennette Tilley Turner. After the reading, please stay for some traditional children's games and crafts.

Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad and Bill Burton Fishing Pier state parks are hiring several seasonal staff positions! Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays.
The job announcement is posted on the state jobs website. Apply by Feb. 23.
Unless otherwise noted, events are held rain or shine, free and fun for all ages; donations are always welcome. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.
Dress for the weather/activity, wear sunscreen and insect repellent, bring plenty of water and snacks, and check for ticks.

 Annual Pass Available for Purchase $75 for Marylanders; $100 for out-of-state visitors
Our annual State Park and Trail Passport grants unlimited day-use admission and boat launching at state parks, and a 10 percent discount on state-operated concessions and boat rentals.
To enhance convenience and value, this year's pass will arrive in a self-contained packet with a detachable hang-tag, and will be valid for a full year from the month of purchase.
Our network of 75 state parks include more than 900 miles of trails for biking, hiking and horseback riding, as well as unique water access and camping facilities.
