Thursdays in February: Frigid February Hikes
2 p.m. at Quail Ridge Picnic Area

Dress in layers with warm shoes, a hat, scarf, and gloves and try the trails when the leaves are down so you can see deep into the woods. Hikes lasts up to two hours and cover roughly 2 miles round-trip. Many natural phenomena will be discussed. You are sure to learn something new on every hike!

February 4: Try a New Trail Hike - Park Office
2 p.m. at the Park Office

Did you know that there are more than 50 miles of trails in Seneca Creek State Park? The always popular Lakeshore Trail is not the only way to hike a loop! Join a volunteer naturalist for an easy-paced loop hike of about 2-3 miles. Each Try a New Trail Hike will start at a different location and feature lesser-traveled trails throughout the park. Look for unique features as you discover your new favorite trail! The February 4 hike will meet at the Park Office.


February 5: Sugar Maple Tapping Demo and Log Cabin Visit
10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at the Park Office

Meet at the Grusendorf Log Cabin next to the Park Office. Learn how easy it is to tap a maple tree! We will be tapping a sugar maple tree next to the log cabin. A tour of the inside of the log cabin will follow.

February 7: Nature Crafts - Groundhog Day
10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at the Park Office

February 2 is Groundhog Day. According to legend, If the groundhog sees its shadow on this day, we will get six more weeks of winter. Come learn about groundhogs and then make your own groundhog shadow craft in celebration of this special holiday.


February 14: Nature Crafts - Valentine's Day
10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at the Park Office

Let someone know you care for them! Come make three-dimensional pop-up tulip cards.

February 21: Nature Crafts - Robin Theater 
10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at the Park Office

Robins migrate for the winter, but not very far. The ones you can see now are probably from New England. The ones you saw in the summer might be down in the Carolinas currently. Come learn about these very common birds and then make a small robin puppet theater to act out what you’ve learned.

February 26: Lake Frank Eagle Nest Watch Hike
2:30 p.m. at Meadowside Nature Center
5100 Meadowside Lane, Rockville

This Montgomery County park is the home of a bald eagle nest. Join us for an approximately 2.5-mile round trip hike to see the nest, maybe eagles, and an active beaver lodge. Bring binoculars and water. This is a natural surface trail with some hills. Please dress for the weather and trail conditions. Please note that there are no restrooms available at this location.


February 28: Nature Crafts - Rain Stick
10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at the Park Office

Spring brings rain that doesn’t turn into snow or ice (usually). The next time it rains, go outside and listen to it as it hits the sidewalk, trees, or as it hits your umbrella or hat. Come and make your own rain stick so you can carry the gentle sound of the rain with you wherever you go.

Unless otherwise noted, events are held rain or shine, free and fun for all ages; donations are always welcome. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

Dress for the weather/activity, wear sunscreen and insect repellent, bring plenty of water and snacks, and remember to check for ticks.
