Garrett County Easement Protects Forest
In December, MET's conservation easement program had the privilege of working with landowners to protect six properties across the state. Among the six properties was an 81- acre mostly forested tract (pictured above) adjacent to Savage River State Forest in Garrett County. Bob Martin has owned this property for many years and, loving the wild nature of the property, wanted to ensure it remains forested and continues to provide habitat for wildlife.
All told, MET protected 1,987 acres of forest, farmland, and wetlands across Maryland in 2022. Conservation-minded landowners are the heart of MET's work. MET is thrilled to have partnered with many generous individuals and families to protect our natural resources for future generations.
Planning on Changes to Your Easement Property in 2023?
If you plan to make changes to your property that is protected by a conservation easement with MET, please contact MET’s stewardship staff. Easements sometimes require advance notification and/ or written approval for certain activities. It may take a minimum of 30 days for MET to review and approve the proposed activities. Please contact MET’s stewardship program staff, Jon Chapman or Josette Markline, to discuss your plans.

Join the Great Backyard Bird Count
Launched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) was the first online citizen-science project to collect data on wild birds and to display results in near real time. Each February, for four days, the GBBC invites people to spend time in their favorite places watching and counting as many birds as they can find and reporting them to the GBBC. These observations help scientists better understand global bird populations before one of their annual migrations. Learn more.

Groundbreaking Wild Turkey Research Set to Begin in Maryland
This winter, DNR is kicking off the first comprehensive study of wild turkeys ever conducted in the state. The 3-year research project aims to answer many questions about factors potentially impacting turkey populations. Beginning in January 2023, wild turkeys will be captured and outfitted with leg-bands and/or GPS radio-transmitters. DNR staff will monitor the birds throughout the year and collect data on survival, reproduction, movements, and habitat use. Learn more.
DNR is asking for the public’s assistance by reporting via online form any turkey flocks they see during the winter.
