Partnership Protects Land in Charles County
Recently, Maryland Environmental Trust and the Conservancy for Charles County were jointly granted a conservation easement by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association on a 29-acre forested property along Marshall Hall Road near the community of Bryans Road. The purpose of this easement is to protect natural lands that are visible from George Washington's Mount Vernon estate, which is approximately four miles north of the easement across the Potomac River in Virginia. This is the second easement project that MET and the Conservancy have partnered on for this purpose.
The Mount Vernon Ladies Association works with nonprofit and governmental partners to permanently protect natural and scenic land within Mount Vernon's historic viewshed, which encomapsses parts of Charles and Prince George's Counties near the Potomac River in Maryland. Over the past 60+ years, Mount Vernon Ladies Association has worked to protect about 5,000 acres of land within the viewshed.
