Succession Planning Workshop
Join Maryland Environmental Trust and Forever Maryland on November 30 in Crownsville for a free workshop on land trust sucession planning.
This workshop, Passing the Baton: The Challenges and Opportunities of Succession Planning, will focus on succession planning and transitions for land trust staff in leadership positions. You will hear from five local Maryland land trusts and learn how they navigated the path and transitioned to new leadership. This event is free of charge and lunch will be provided. Registration is required and ends on November 23.
Applications Open for 2023 Keep Maryland Beautiful Grants
$92,000 Available for Community Beautification, Greening, and Environmental Initiatives
Three different grants are being offered to help nonprofit groups, communities, and land trusts support environmental education projects, litter removal, citizen stewardship, and solve natural resource issues in urban and rural areas. Keep Maryland Beautiful grants will be offered in two categories: Environmental Education and Community Initiatives for community groups, local governments, and nonprofits; and Land Trust Capacity, Excellence, and Stewardship for local land trusts.
This year, the total available funding for the Land Trust Capacity, Excellence and Stewardship grants is $55,000. The deadline to apply for funding is November 15, 2022. Awards will be announced in spring 2023.

DNR's New Conservation Careers Guide
A career in conservation is not only limited to life science and geosciences, but a wide range of disciplines that support action to protect, preserve, restore, and conserve our natural resources. The Department of Natural Resource's new “Guide To Conservation Careers in Maryland” is designed to present career options for young adults and career changers who want to make a difference, who enjoy being outdoors, and who are passionate about the environment. This Guide lays out the variety of pathways available in Maryland to support your learning: the academic tracks from high school to college and post-graduate work; vocational training programs; internships; and more. SRLT's Conservation Easement Briefing for Legal, Tax, and Real Estate Professionals
Professional services providers are invited to join Scenic Rivers Land Trust for an in-person breakfast briefing on November 2 in Annapolis covering the legal and tax framework of conservation easements. Participants will learn about significant income, property, and estate tax benefits that might be available. Program highlights include an overview of current funding sources for protecting forests and agricultural land. All professional services providers are welcome, though the content of the presentation is geared toward lawyers, realtors, and tax and financial advisors. Learn more.

Framing the Future: Strengthening the Role of Women in Forestry

The Maryland Forestry Foundation hosts a free monthly webinar series, Framing the Future, to provide education and discussion on various aspects of forest and environmental policy. This month, the Foundation is excited to present a preview of the upcoming documentary, "Forest Her: The Next Wave of Conservation," airing this December. We'll be joined by the documentary's creator, Producer/Director/Writer Cheryle Franceschi, as well as by Lydia Martin, an Ecological Design Consultant and private forest manager featured in "Forest Her," and by Anne Hairston-Strang, Acting State Forester for the Maryland DNR Forest Service. New High-Resolution, Land-Use and Change Data Available
With support from the CBP, the USGS, Chesapeake Conservancy and the University of Vermont developed an improved 1-meter resolution land use/land cover data set for the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The improved data have been almost a decade in the making. The new land data provide two primary improvements: (1) better characterization of the types of land use, and (2) land-change analysis.

Story Archive: Saltwater Intrusion on Maryland's Lower Eastern Shore
The landward movement of seawater into coastal communities is causing salt damage to land along the eastern seaboard of the United States. For coastal communities like on Maryland's rural Lower Eastern Shore, that can mean invasive marsh species, undrinkable water, damaged forests, reduced agricultural crop yields, and salt-stressed soils.

The Bird Migration Explorer captures the joy of birds and the wonder of migration through a series of interactive maps built using the latest and best-available migration and conservation science. Using this unique digital platform, visitors can learn about the full annual cycle for 458 species of migratory birds that regularly breed in the United States and Canada and use areas in Latin America and the Caribbean during other times of the year.
