Over 140 Acres Protected in St. Mary's County
Maryland Environmental Trust is thrilled that 144 acres of forested land in St. Mary's County is now permanently protected by a new conservation easement donated to MET by the Rieckhoff family. The entire property is identified by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources as significant for biodiversity conservation, and contains habitat for rare species. Additionally, the property contains some significant non-tidal wetland areas. Protection of this property adds to an adjacent large block of protected lands along the Potomac River.

Reforestation Opportunity for Maryland Landowners
The trees on your land provide you a myriad of benefits. For almost a decade, the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay has partnered with Maryland Forest Service and the Maryland Forestry Foundation to help landowners implement reforestation planting projects through the Healthy Forests Healthy Waters program. With grant funding secured from the Maryland Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays Trust Fund, the Alliance has been able to provide turnkey tree reforestation projects at no cost to the landowner. Maryland Forest Service and Alliance staff work with participating landowners to develop the planting plan and oversee the projects that are all implemented by experienced natural resources contractors and maintained for the first three growing seasons.
The Alliance is looking for landowners interested in a fall 2023 or spring 2024 planting of one or more acres. If you are interested in this opportunity or would like more information, please contact the Alliance as soon as possible at forests@allianceforthebay.org. Projects for the next round of grant funding will be submitted on December 6, 2022. Learn more.

Game Bird Stamp Contest Calls for Artisits
If you love to capture the Bay’s wildlife through photography or art, this contest is for you. One skilled local artist’s work will be chosen for Maryland’s next Migratory Game Bird Stamp.
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is inviting artists to submit up to three original works from now until November 3, 2022. The contest combines artistic skill with knowledge of Maryland wildlife. The proceeds from Maryland’s stamps pay for migratory game bird research and improving habitat on state public lands. Since the program was put into place in 1974, stamp sales have raised more than $7 million for migratory game projects. Learn more.

Fall Foliage Preview for 2022
Welcome to DNR's fall foliage report for 2022. Fall officially began on Thursday, September 22 at 9:04 p.m. and the outlook for this year is positive. It’s hard to predict what kind of season Maryland will have, but there are a few factors that affect fall foliage, helping us to develop a science-based forecast. In western Maryland we’re already seeing the falling black gum leaves decorating the dark forest floor with pops of pink. There are similar reports from Southern Maryland, where the yellow poplars are also joining in, as summer waves its last goodbye. Learn more.
