Partners in Action

New MET Easement Protects Public Access in Baltimore

The Maryland Port Administration granted a conservation easement on its 47 acre property at Masonville Cove, located along the south shore of the Patapsco River in the City of Baltimore. The easement requires that the property remain accessible to the public for recreation and education. Baltimore Green Space, a land trust based in the city, co-holds the easement with MET. The property consists of tidal and non-tidal wetlands, forest and open meadows, as well as extensive shoreline on the Patapsco River. There are beautiful views to and from the property. A walking trail system also exists and is popular with school groups and birders. The property is managed through the Masonville Cove Partnership, which is the nation's first Urban Wildlife Refuge Partnership.

This pointer discusses easement drafting and stewardship considerations for wildlife friendly fencing, livestock fencing, temporary fencing, riparian fencing, privacy and safety fencing, fence related notice and approval, adverse possession, monitoring and enforcement. i-Tree is a state-of-the-art, peer-reviewed software suite from the USDA Forest Service that provides urban and rural forestry analysis and benefits assessment tools. The i-Tree tools can help strengthen forest management and advocacy efforts by quantifying forest structure and the environmental benefits that trees provide.

Alien Forest Pest Explorer

The Alien Forest Pest Explorer (AFPE) is an interactive web tool which provides detailed spatial data describing pest distributions and host inventory estimates for damaging, non-indigenous forest insect and disease pathogens established in the US. This tool allows users to scale county-level data to meet local forest health research needs.
