New MET Easement Protects Public Access in Baltimore
The Maryland Port Administration granted a conservation easement on its 47 acre property at Masonville Cove, located along the south shore of the Patapsco River in the City of Baltimore. The easement requires that the property remain accessible to the public for recreation and education. Baltimore Green Space, a land trust based in the city, co-holds the easement with MET.
The property consists of tidal and non-tidal wetlands, forest and open meadows, as well as extensive shoreline on the Patapsco River. There are beautiful views to and from the property. A walking trail system also exists and is popular with school groups and birders. The property is managed through the Masonville Cove Partnership, which is the nation's first Urban Wildlife Refuge Partnership.

MET Hosts Volunteer Appreciation Event
In June, MET hosted an in-person volunteer appreciation event for our Land Steward Volunteers. The event was a welcome opportunity to bring volunteers together in person, and celebrate all their hard work.
This past fiscal year (July 1, 2021-June 30, 2022), MET volunteers accounted for close to 20% of all submitted easement monitoring reports, raising the overall number of volunteer reports completed to 193 from 83 in fiscal year 2021. Volunteers donated 350 hours of service. There were 38 amazing volunteers that gave their time and energy to MET this year, and we couldn’t thank them enough! Their hard work is what ensures the longevity of MET easements, and the environmental health of Maryland.

Smithsonian Unveils Millenia of History at Woodlawn House Exhibit
Tucked away in more than 2,500 acres of sprawling hillside in Edgewater, lies a quaint redbrick building — Woodlawn House. After excavating about 200 artifacts from the property and restoring it to pristine condition, the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center celebrated the opening of the house as a small exhibit. It will be open to visitors for free every Saturday, starting in July, from 10:00am to 12:30pm. MET worked with Scenic Rivers Land Trust and the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center to protect part of this property by a conservation easement in 2008. The easement portion of the property protects more than 575 acres of forests and farmland overlooking the Rhode River. Read more.
