Snowshoeing

January 15: Introduction to Snowshoeing
12:30 - 1:30 p.m. at the Recreation Hall, followed by a guided hike

Join Ranger Julia for this free introduction to the sport of snowshoeing, and learn about the history, equipment, beginner's skills, and joy of experiencing winter in deep snow. After the indoor presentation, if conditions allow, skills will be practiced on a guided hike of the Orchard Loop. Rental fees will be waived, but equipment is limited. To reserve snowshoes for the program, email julia.musselwhite@maryland.gov by January 14. All ages are welcome. 


Furs

January 15: Furs, Feathers, and Skulls!
2-4 p.m. at the Lake House 

Drop by the Lake House for this hands-on program, where Ranger Noah will be displaying a collection of furs, feathers, and skulls. Test your knowledge of local birds and mammals, and learn about the unique traits that set these animals apart. This is a "come and go" display, so feel free to stop by any time during the two-hour window. 


Lake House Fire

January 15: Movie Night - Frozen
5-7 p.m. at the Lake House 

Gather 'round the fireplace and stay toasty-warm during this free showing of Frozen (rated PG). Popcorn and drinks will be available for purchase at the Snack Bar. 


smores

January 16: S'mores are for the Birds (just kidding)!
2:30 - 4:30 p.m. at the Lake House 

Drop by the Lake House and learn how to make your own bird feeders out of pine cones and other natural materials. Then, relax by the indoor campfire with a sweet treat and see what birds make an appearance at the Lake House feeders. Donations welcome. 


Full Moon

January 16: Full Moon Hike
6-7 p.m. at the Lake House 

Join Ranger Noah for this full moon hike on the Orchard Loop Trail. Enjoy the beauty of the forest under a full moon, while learning about some of New Germany's nocturnal residents. Photo by Emily Boward.


Winter

January 17: Hemlock Hike
9-10 a.m. at the Lake House 

Join Ranger Noah on this 2-mile hike on the Turnpike Trail and Hemlock Loop, and learn about New Germany's native trees, such as the eastern hemlock and eastern white pine, and their importance in the ecosystem.


Birding

January 22: Beginner Birder Hike and Bird Feeder Make-and-Take
10 a.m. - noon at the Lake House 

Join Ranger Noah on this 2-mile hike on the Turnpike Trail and Cabin Loop Trail and learn about New Germany's native birds and some easy tips to help you become a beginner birder. Afterwards, make some crafty bird feeders out of natural materials.


Ice Fishing

January 22: Introduction to Ice Fishing
12:30 - 1:30 p.m. at the Recreation Hall

Join Ranger Brian for this free introduction to the sport of ice fishing and explore the beginner's skills, equipment, safety considerations, and excitement surrounding winter fishing. If conditions allow, skills will be demonstrated and practiced on New Germany Lake. New Germany School

January 22: History Hike
2-3 p.m. at the Lake House 

Join Ranger Noah on this 1.5-mile hike on the Ice House Trail and learn about the history of New Germany State Park. The hike will conclude with a tour of the one-room scoolhouse. 


Hiking

January 29: Heart-Healthy Hike
9-11 a.m. at the Lake House 

Get your heart pumping and walk off those holiday goodies on this challenging 4-mile hike on the Dynamite Shack Loop. Photo by Teresa Rubio.

January 29: Snowman Hike
1-3 p.m. at the Lake House 

Join Ranger Noah on this easy 1-mile hike on the Orchard Loop, followed by a snowman building challenge! Afterwards, warm up by the indoor fireplace with complimentary hot cocoa. 


Bird

January 30: Coffee with the Birds: Fireside Feeder Chats
7-9 a.m. at the Lake House 

Enjoy complimentary coffee by the indoor campfire and see what birds make an appearance at the Lake House feeders. Photo by Lori R. Bramble.


Heather Rees

January 30: Hiking with the Birds
9 a.m. at the Lake House 

Join Ranger Noah on this easy-to-moderate 2-mile hike on the Hemlock Loop, where you will learn about New Germany's native birds. Photo by Heather Rees.


Unless otherwise noted, events are held rain or shine, free and fun for all ages; donations are always welcome. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

Dress for the weather/activity, wear sunscreen and insect repellent, bring plenty of water and snacks, and check for ticks.

New Germany staff also manages Big Run, Casselman River Bridge and Dans Mountain state parks.
