Medley’s Neck Farm Now Has Protected Status
In December, MET partnering with Patuxent Tidewater Land Trust (PTLT), and with funding from the US Navy, completed a conservation easement project with the Thorne family to permanently protect their 56-acre property on Medleys Neck Road near Leonardtown in St. Mary’s County. This beautiful parcel consists of nontidal wetlands, forest, and roughly three acres of cleared land for the farmstead and a farm field. Two streams feeding the Poplar Hill Creek also flow through the forest on the property, providing approximately 3,400 linear feet of forested stream buffer that is critical for maintaining water quality. The Navy, through its Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration, or REPI, program, paid the Thornes for half of the appraised value of this easement, and the Thornes generously donated the balance of the value. MET and PTLT co-hold the easement with the Navy.
Rose Thorne recalls fond memories of growing up on the property with her siblings and playing in the woods. She says the Thornes are not only thrilled to be able to protect this land for future generations, but also as a remembrance of their parents for giving them such a lovely place to grow up.
