Jan. 8: Rhythms of the Year
Noon at the Nature Center

Explore the changes in our parks over the course of a year.

Phenology is the study of cyclic and seasonal natural phenomena, especially in relation to climate, plant, and animal life. It comes from the Greek word meaning "to appear," and often includes the study of when species appear in an area throughout the year, such as flowers blooming or birds migrating.

Starting in January, we will meet once a month to observe and record what we see. We will compare our observations over the course of the year and see how things change. We'll explore different tools for making and recording our observations: cameras, paper journals, smartphones. Rain or shine, if the park is open we'll be out there observing. Be sure to dress for the weather. This activity will be suitable for everyone ages 3 and up.

Jan. 9: Nature Journaling
Noon – 4 p.m. at the Nature Center

Make a nature journal (or bring your own) to keep a record of the things you see in nature. We'll talk about the different ways you can keep a nature journal and then spend some time observing nature in the park.

Come learn how corn snakes have adjusted to meet the challenges of their environment. The presentation is suitable for all ages.

Jan. 15: Signs of Winter Hike
1 p.m. at the Nature Center

The forest may seem to be asleep in the dead of winter, but there's a lot going on! Join a volunteer ranger on a hike of the Yellow and Blue trails, and find out what we can learn about nature, even in the middle of winter.

Jan. 22: Owl Pellet Dissection

Jan. 23: Animal Tracks
Noon – 4 p.m. at the Nature Center

Join a park naturalist to learn about the animals that live in the park and how to identify them by their tracks, and then go on a short walk looking for tracks.

Join a park naturalist for a hike on one of the trails in the park. Distance can be decided based on attendance (up to 3+ miles). Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water. Meet at the Nature Center.

Unless otherwise noted, events are held rain or shine, free and fun for all ages; donations are always welcome. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.
