Easement Protects Farm in Somerset County
The Maryland Environmental Trust (MET) and the Lower Shore Land Trust just accepted a conservation easement donation from the Insley Layfield family! The conservation easement protects the 70-acre farm in Somerset County. The farm has rich agricultural and ecological resources. Approximately 16 acres of the property are prime farmland and 40 acres of soils of statewide importance. The entire property falls within a Targeted Ecological Area, which has been identified as a conservation priority by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) as part of the GreenPrint program. The property is within a National Audubon Society designated Important Bird Area (IBA) named the Pocomoke-Nassawango IBA. The forest of the property is Tier 3: “Highly Significant for Biodiversity Conservation”. BioNet is a product of the Natural Heritage Program of DNR’s Wildlife and Heritage Service that prioritizes areas for terrestrial and freshwater biodiversity conservation. MET is pleased to accept this conservation easement donation and is thankful to our donors!
