Assist the Breeding Bird Atlas Project
The Breeding Bird Atlas of Maryland and the District of Columbia is a five-year project documenting the distribution and abundance of our local breeding bird populations, from turkeys to ducks to sparrows. This information is used to manage habitat and sustain healthy ecosystems.
If you find a nest—whether it’s in the backyard or the backwoods—you can contribute to the project! Visit the department's Breeding Bird Atlas website to learn how to get involved or to explore the data.

Clean, Drain, Dry Before Launching Onto Deep Creek Lake
This summer, Deep Creek Lake Launch Stewards have intercepted boats carrying aquatic invasive species that were seeking to launch into the lake. Stewards directed the cooperative boat owners to clean and disinfect their boats at local marinas before they entered the water.
The Launch Steward Program is a cooperative effort between Garrett College’s Natural Resource and Wildlife Technology program and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Learn more about the program here.
