MID-AUGUST PROGRAMS

Events are free unless otherwise noted; donations always welcome. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. 

Reminders: Dress for the weather/activity, wear sunscreen and insect repellant, bring plenty of water and snacks, and remember to check for ticks.

Dream Catcher

Aug. 10: Dream Catcher Craft
7 p.m. at the Nature Center (Rain or shine)

Join our naturalist to learn about the Native American legend and tradition of dream catchers. You will get to make one of your own using natural materials.


Volleyball at New Germany

Aug. 17: Volleyball
3 p.m. at the Volleyball Court (Shine only)

Join staff for a friendly Healthy Parks, Healthy People pickup game. Please wear sneakers.


Old Time Jam 2018

Aug. 17: Old-Time Jam
6:30-9 p.m. at the Lake House (Rain or shine)

Musicians and listeners of all ages are invited to share and enjoy traditional “old-timey” music. Snacks and gifts will be available for purchase.


CCC Camp

Aug. 18: History Hike
10 a.m. at the Lake House (Shine only)

On this easy stroll, a ranger will discuss the history of the area as a 19th century industrial community, Civilian Conservation Corps camp and state park.


Backpack

Aug. 18: "Packing Makes Perfect" Hike
2 p.m. at the Lake House (Shine only)

Join a ranger to learn some tips for how to plan and pack for a perfect day-trip in the outdoors, followed by an easy 1.5-mile hike.


Kids in Nature

Aug. 18: Exploring the Language of Nature
4 p.m. at the Lake House (Shine only)

On this 45-minute walk, volunteer naturalist Jack Slocomb will guide you through a discovery process designed to create a deep connection with natureAppropriate for ages 5 and up.


Casselman River Bridge

Aug. 20: Vagabond Tour
Noon-1 p.m. at Casselman River Bridge (Shine only)

Dozens of Model T Fords will be visiting Casselman River Bridge for a historic 100th Anniversary Tour commemorating the 1918 summer vacation of Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Harvey Firestone and John Burroughs. Drop by for a unique photo opportunity.

Last call for submissions
The Maryland Natural Resource photo contest wraps up this month. Enter your best shots showcasing Maryland's great outdoors by midnight Aug. 31

Winners will be featured in the 2019 wall calendar; additional prizes include cash and park passes.


New Germany staff also manages Big Run, Casselman River Bridge and Dans Mountain state parks.
