LATE JULY/EARLY AUGUST PROGRAMS

Events are free unless otherwise noted; donations always welcome. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. 

Reminders: Dress for the weather/activity, wear sunscreen and insect repellant, bring plenty of water and snacks, and remember to check for ticks.

Moth

July 27: Like a Moth to a Flame
TIME CHANGE: 8:30 p.m. at the Lake House (Shine only)

It's National Moth Week! 

"Moth"-ers of all ages are invited to search for these beautiful, often camouflaged wonders. Bring a flashlight. 


LNT

July 28: Leave No Trace Hike
2 p.m. at the Lake House (Shine only)

This activity will feature a short hike with a ranger, on which you will learn about Leave No Trace outdoor ethics.


Harry Spiker with Bear Cubs

July 28: Maryland's Black Bears
7:30 p.m. at the Lake House (Rain or shine)

Maryland Game Mammal Section Leader Harry Spiker will discuss black bear behavior, biology, habitat and history, as well as the state's management program, and how people can learn to coexist with these native animals.


CCC Camp

July 29: History Hike
10 a.m. at the Lake House (Shine only)

On this easy stroll, a ranger will discuss the history of the area as a 19th century industrial community, Civilian Conservation Corps camp and state park.


Boat Knots

Aug. 3: Knot Tying
3 p.m. at the Nature Center (Rain or shine)

Join a ranger to learn some knots that will come in handy for boating, camping and more.


Old Time Jam 2018

Aug. 3: Old-Time Jam
6:30-9 p.m. at the Lake House (Rain or shine)

Musicians and listeners of all ages are invited to share and enjoy traditional “old-timey” music. Snacks and gifts will be available for purchase.


Moonshine Classic

Aug. 4: Moonshine Classic 10k Race
9 a.m. at Big Run State Park (Rain or shine)

This annual fun run/walk features a picturesque 6.2-mile run alongside Savage River. An awards ceremony and picnic will follow. Please bring a covered dish to share!


Friends Logo

Aug. 4: Volunteer Meeting
9 a.m. at the Lake House (Rain or shine)

The Friends of New Germany is a nonprofit organization comprised of volunteers who care about the park and want to help enhance, maintain and support it for everyone to enjoy. Anyone interested is encouraged to attend.

Aug. 5: Go Birding!
9 a.m. at the Lake House (Shine only)

Bring your own binoculars on this guided hike and discover some of the many species of birds found in the park.


Weed or Wildflower

Aug. 6: Weed or Wildflower
9-10:30 a.m. at the Native Plant Garden (Shine only)

Bring your work gloves, kneeling pads, weeding tools and some elbow grease to help remove unwanted plants from our native garden!

Last call for submissions
The Maryland Natural Resource photo contest wraps up this month. Enter your best shots showcasing Maryland's great outdoors by midnight Aug. 31

Winners will be featured in the 2019 wall calendar; additional prizes include cash and park passes.


New Germany staff also manages Big Run, Casselman River Bridge and Dans Mountain state parks.
