JULY PROGRAM CALENDAR

Events are free unless otherwise noted; when applicable payments will be collected before an event (exact cash or check). Donations always welcome.

Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

Please email Andrea Townsley-Sapp for additional information or to register. All events subject to cancellation due to weather. Check our Twitter page for updates.

Reminders: Dress for the weather/activity, wear sunscreen and insect repellant, bring plenty of water and snacks, and remember to check for ticks.


Hereford

July 3: Guided Hike to Raven Rock Falls
6:30 p.m. at York Road in the Hereford Area

Join naturalists for a moderately difficult 2-mile hike along the Gunpowder South Trail through beautiful protected state-designated wildlands. This trail will lead past Raven Rock Falls, a cascading water feature located opposite the Big Gunpowder Falls.

July 4 & 7: Star-Spangled Baltimore
4 p.m. at North Point State Battlefield

Join our knowledgeable naturalists as they lead a hands-on exploration of the history of our nation's flag and the story behind The Star-Spangled Banner. 


July 6: Campfire Cooking Basics
7 p.m. at Jerusalem Mill

Gather around the fire pit to learn all about campfire cooking! Feel free to bring your own recipes that you'd like to share, along with flashlights and headlamps. Donations to the Friends of Jerusalem Mill are highly encouraged. Fun for families!


July 7: Moth Mania and Campfire
9:30 p.m. at Jerusalem Mill

Join us as we set up a moth attraction station to observe, catch and identify moths and other nighttime insects. Naturalists will be on hand to help identify species. A campfire will also be lit and free s'mores will be served! 


HartMillerIsland

July 8: Family Fun Day
11 a.m. at Hart-Miller Island (Shine only)

Many drop-in activities are planned for the day, including a guided bike or hike tour of the island, fish-seining, milkweed patch exploration and insect identification, drop-in volleyball, and crafts for the kids! Accessible by personal boat only.


July 13: Tubing at Monkton
5:30 p.m. at Monkton Station

Beat the summer heat with a leisurely tubing trip down the Big Gunpowder Falls. We'll begin with a 1.8-mile hike up the Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail followed by a two-hour float back to Monkton Station. Participants must be at least 10 years old. 

Registration is required; please email Andrea Townsley-Sapp. Participation is limited to 24 people. A $5 program fee will cover the tube and life jacket rentals.


DaysCove

July 14: Sunset Paddle at Days Cove
7:30 p.m. at Days Cove

Experience the marshlands as they come alive with wildlife activity in the dusk. Individuals must be at least 12 years old to participate in this 2.4-mile paddle. Please bring a headlamp! 

Registration is required; please email Andrea Townsley-Sapp. Participation is limited to 24 people. A $10 payment will cover the canoe and life jacket rentals.

Days Cove is located at the end of Days Cove Road, off Route 40 in White Marsh. Keep left at the split for the reclamation center, and travel down the gravel road. There is a sign out front that says Days Cove Environmental Education Center. Area only accessible during special events and programs.


July 17: Culture of Baltimore in the 1800s
6 p.m. at North Point State Battlefield

A hidden treasure in Dundalk, the battlefield was once site of the defense of Baltimore against British advancement. Meet under the flag poles to join naturalists for a journey back in time.


July 20: Take Me Fishing!
5:30 p.m. at Dundee Creek Marina

Join us for fishing instruction for children under 16. Learn how to tie fishing knots, cast a line and reel in the big one. No experience needed; all resources will be provided.


SweetAir

July 20: Navigation Basics and Intro to Orienteering
6 p.m. at Sweet Air

Learn how to use a compass and topographical map before taking off on an adventure around the park! Naturalists will discuss the activity of orienteering before a 2.5-mile course through the woods.


July 21: Owl Prowl
8 p.m. at Sparks Bank Nature Center

Spend an evening hiking in the woods listening for calls. Learn about these amazing animals with activities like pellet dissections in the nature center. Quiet is the key to a successful night hike; please plan accordingly when considering the participation of very young children. Please bring a flashlight or headlamp.


July 22: Campfire by the Gunpowder
7:30 p.m. at Sparks Bank Nature Center

Bring your chairs or a picnic blanket and enjoy free s'mores by the edge of the falls! The whole family can unwind and hear our naturalists share their knowledge of historical and natural resources while participating in a fun activity. S'mores ingredients will be provided, but feel free to bring your own campfire snacks!


DaysCovePaddling

July 27: Full Moon Twilight Paddle
8 p.m. at Days Cove (Shine only)

Explore the scenic cove by canoe and experience the marshlands at night! Please bring a headlamp. Individuals must be at least 12 years old to participate in this 2.4-mile paddle.

NorthPointStatePark

July 28: Geocaching 101
1 p.m. at North Point State Park

Join us for a crash course in the outdoor treasure hunting activity of geocaching! We will hike for approximately 3 miles and attempt to locate several caches placed along the trail. Bring your GPS device or smartphone, or borrow one of our handheld units. If using a smartphone, we encourage you to download the mobile app beforehand.

A service charge is in effect: $3/vehicle for residents; $5/vehicle for nonresidents.


DundeeCreekMarina

July 29: Canoes on the Creek
11 a.m. at Dundee Creek Marina

Join this naturalist-led canoe trip and learn about the wonderful wildlife that lives along this brackish waterway. 

Registration is required; please email Andrea Townsley-Sapp. Participation is limited to 24 people. A $10 payment will cover canoe and life jacket rentals. This event appropriate for ages 12 and up.

The 2018 Maryland Natural Resource Photo Contest is underway. We're accepting entries of birds, flora, insects, landscapes, recreation, weather and wildlife now through Aug. 31. Show us what you've got!


Gunpowder Falls staff also manages Hart-Miller Island and North Point state parks, and the Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail.
