Come out and play at Patapsco Valley State Park and Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area!

Are you curious about birds of prey? Join us as we discuss one of our fascinating avian educators. Come with lots of questions and be prepared to learn. Fun for the whole family!
March 2: Cascade History Hike 1-2 p.m. at Orange Grove Parking Lot (Shine only)
Join the Maryland Conservation Corps crew on a moderately difficult 2-mile scenic hike, filled with fun facts about nature and the history of the area. Enjoy alluring cascading waterfalls and dazzling hills and valleys! Dress for the weather and bring water. Leashed pets welcome.
March 3: A Beginner's Guide to Invasive Plants 1-3 p.m. at Soldiers Delight (Rain or shine)
Join biologist Paula Becker in battling some local invasive plants. Discussion covers their impact on our natural areas and strategies to repel the offending hordes. Come prepared to hike! We'll start inside and head out to the trails, weather permitting.
This program is eligible for the Model B Junior Ranger program.
 March 3: Owl Prowl 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Soldiers Delight (Rain or shine)
Meet an ambassador owl from our aviary and take a night hike to listen for owls. Learn about biology, conservation, diet and habitat. $5 per person.

March 4: Serpentine Ecosystem Restoration Project 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at Soldiers Delight (Shine only)
Volunteer with the Maryland Natural Heritage Program to assist with removing Virginia pine and other invasive plants, allowing native grasses to recolonize the area. A variety of methods will be used, including hand pulling, chipping and prescribed burns.
Bring a lunch, snacks and plenty of water. Pack light, and wear layered clothing, a hat, sturdy shoes and work gloves. Call 410-260-8581 after 7 p.m. the night before to check for inclement weather schedule changes.
March 4 and 25: Patapsco Fun Series 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Avalon 105 (Shine only)
Join us for a day of trail maintenance work. Lunch will be provided by Patapsco Fun Series sponsors.
March 10: Stargazing 8-10 p.m. at Soldiers Delight (Rain or shine)
As the spring equinox grows near, learn about the wonders of the moon activity and how it affects us all. Mercury will be visible. Telescopes will be provided by the Westminster Astronomical Society.
This program is eligible for the Model B Junior Ranger program.
March 11: Tracks and T-Shirts 1-2 p.m. at Soldiers Delight (Rain or shine)
Join a park naturalist to learn a little bit about the animal tracks that might be found in the area. Then we’ll decorate a T-shirt or another fabric item with an image of animal footprints. Bring your own item to decorate; paint and stencils provided. $2 per person.
March 20: Spring Stroll 10 a.m.-noon at Soldiers Delight (Shine only)
Load up the family and some friends for an outdoor excursion through the woods! We’ll walk at a leisurely pace on the Choate Mine and Red Run trails to enjoy the first day of spring. The walk will be around 2 miles, so please bring water and wear closed toed shoes to protect you from the slightly rocky ground. Leashed pets are welcome.
March 21: Bird-Friendly Backyards 7-9 p.m. at Soldiers Delight (Rain or shine)
Learn how to make the ultimate bird-friendly habitat by enticing bugs, selecting the right seed, providing nest boxes and more. Appropriate for ages 12 and up.
This program is eligible for the Model B Junior Ranger program.
March 24: Ssslithering Sssnakes 1-2 p.m. at Soldiers Delight (Rain or shine)
Celebrate the return of warm temperatures with some of our snake ambassadors. See snakes up close and learn about these amazing animals. There's no need to be afraid of these friendly fellows; they help us in ways that you might not realize! $5 per person. Appropriate for ages 5 and up.
March 25: Storytelling Hour 1-2 p.m. at Soldiers Delight (Rain or shine)
Join a volunteer ranger in the reading of a nature-themed story. This program was created with younger children in mind, but everyone is welcome.
March 30: Teen Ranger Work Day 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at Park Headquarters (Rain or shine)
The is a full-day volunteer opportunity for teenagers between ages 14-18 who are looking for service hours and interested in working outside. After completing 40 hours of service within the park, volunteers will get receive a shirt. Those who complete 100 hours within a year are eligible for free entry to all state parks.
 March 30: Camping Roundup 1-3 p.m. at Hilton Area Amphitheater (Rain or shine)
Kick off the 2018 camping season around the campfire and learn the ins and outs of camping. Learn how to construct a fire, pitch a tent and play a few games.

March 30 and April 2: Spring Break Junior Rangers 12:30-4 p.m. at Soldiers Delight (Rain or shine)
For spring break, we will be holding a special intensive two-day Junior Ranger camp for kids ages 7-10. We will learn about the wildlife in our area, what it means to be a park ranger and how you can help our environment. Please register by March 16.
