LATE AUGUST EVENTS AT ROCKY GAP

Please email naturalist Jenna Linhart with any questions.

All events are held rain or shine. Last-minute cancellations may occur in the event of a heat advisory, thunderstorm or other natural threat.


Aug. 15: Park HIIT Workout
5:30 p.m. at the Mountain View Pavilion

Change up your workouts with this 45-minute high intensity interval training course instructed by health coach, educator and personal trainer Carey Moffatt. All fitness levels welcome; can be adjusted to individual needs. 


Aug. 16: Feathered Friends Hike
11 a.m. at the Nature Center

Join a naturalist for a one-hour stroll around the lakeside Loop Trail to identify local birds by sight and sound.


Aug. 16: Wild Women's Wednesday; 4,000-Step Hike and Standing Core Workout
6 p.m. at the Lakeview Pavilion

Get your steps in while enjoying the company of some fellow wild women. We’ll walk along the East side of the Lakeside Loop Trail. An optional 10-minute standing core workout will round out the workout. 


Aug. 17: Open Swim
5:45 p.m. at West Beach

Need to prepare for an upcoming race? Looking for a new fitness challenge? We have just the option for you. Join us in the day use area for open swims. If air and water temperatures do not equal 120 degrees, you must wear a wet/dry suit to participate. Lifeguards will guide your swim to provide a safe environment.


Aug. 17: Trail Run
6:45 p.m. at the Boat House

Following the open swim, join the lifeguards for a 1.5-mile run along a section of the Lakeside Loop Trail. 


Aug. 18: Beaver Lodge Hike
1 p.m. at the Nature Center

Take this 45-minute guided hike along Lakeside Loop Trail with a naturalist. You will see a real beaver lodge and learn some interesting facts about this rodent.


Aug. 18: Glorious Gorge Hike
7 p.m. at the Touch of Nature Parking Lot

Join us on this breathtaking, intermediate, one-hour hike through the Gorge of Rocky Gap. Bring water and be prepared to climb over rocks and up steep hills.


Aug. 19: Canyon Overlook Hike
3 p.m. at the Touch of Nature Parking Lot

Join us on this short hike through an old hemlock forest to view the “gap” of Rocky Gap. This hike will last approximately 45 minutes and is great for beginners!


Aug. 20: Wonderful Woodpeckers Hike
11 a.m. at the Nature Center

Join us as we hike part of the Lakeside Loop Trail looking for the signs and sounds of our woodpecker friends!


Aug. 21: Solar Eclipse Fun

Total Eclipse Hike
2 p.m. at the Nature Center

This free, family-friendly walk will explore the scenic Lakeside Loop Trail through the campground for a unique experience to see Lake Habeeb in the shadow of the sun. Viewing glasses will be provided on a first come, first serve basis.

Eclipse Hula Hoop Workshop
4 p.m. at West Beach

The circle is a commonly occurring shape in nature, from planets to ripples in water. Join us as we celebrate three of the most prominent: the sun, the moon and the Earth, using yet another circle, the hula hoop. This workshop will focus on fun and play, and all skill levels are welcome. Quality handmade hoops from Rhythm Hoop Dance will be available for to borrow or purchase. 

Eclipse Yoga
5:15 p.m. at West Beach

Join Yogafit instructor Samantha Shank for an all-levels flow class as we celebrate the solar eclipse. Cycles in nature remind us to be present in the moment and to appreciate the wonder and beauty around us. Bring a mat or blanket.

Aug. 22: National Honey Bee Day HIIT Workout 
6 p.m. at the Mountain View Pavilion

What’s the buzz about high intensity interval training workouts? They can be fun and challenging at the same time, and are adaptable to individual fitness needs. Join us for a special pollinator-inspired workout. For ages 10 and up; all fitness levels welcome.


Aug. 23: Wild Women's Wednesday; Mindful Paddle and Nature Meditation
6 p.m. at the Boat House

Let go of the stressors in your life and join us for a peaceful paddle and guided nature meditation. We’ll paddle across the lake and then complete a short guided meditation, where the forest and water meet. We’ll focus on breath, the sights and sounds of nature and ultimately, mindfulness, before paddling back across the lake. Meet about 10 minutes early and bring a towel to sit on if you'd like. Boat type is first come, first serve. 


Aug. 24: Hula Hoop Workshop
6:30 p.m. at West Beach

Hula Hooping can be more than child’s play; learn the basics of waist hooping and a few basic tricks at this beginner’s workout! There’s a world of fun and fitness hidden in the circle. Quality handmade hoops from Rhythm Hoop Dance will be available for purchase before we start; loaner hoops will also be available. 


Aug. 24: Sunset Beach Yoga
7:15 p.m. at West Beach

Unwind and join Yogafit instructor Leslee for a beautiful beach yoga practice. Meet in the day use area and bring a mat or blanket.


Aug. 25: Evening Paddle
6 p.m. at the Boat House

Enjoy a peaceful paddle by canoe or kayak on Lake Habeeb. While paddling, we will be looking for native wildlife in the water, on the shore and in the skies! Arrive about 10 minutes early.


Aug. 26: Back to School Outdoor Movie Night
7 p.m. at West Beach

Looking for one last hoorah for the kiddos before they hit Allegany, Garrett or Mineral County Schools? Join us for this free family fun night! Activities include face painting, music, a dance party, snacks and more! A screening of Moana will start at 8.


Aug. 29: HIIT Workout
5:30 p.m. at the Mountain View Pavilion

Change up your workout with this 45-minute high intensity course instructed by health coach, educator and personal trainer Carey Moffatt. Meet in the day use area beside the Mountain View Pavilion. All fitness levels welcome.


Aug. 30: Wild Women's Wednesday–Stand Up Paddleboard Balance and Core Workout
6 p.m. at the Boat House

Love paddleboarding and want to try something new? Join Naturalist Jenna for a stand up paddle infused with exercises that work your core muscles and develop improved balance. Paddleboards will be available on a first come, first serve basis. Pre-registration is required unless you are bringing your own board.


Aug. 31: Body Blaster Workout
5:30 p.m. at the Hawk's Nest Concession Building

Take your cardio fitness to the next level with health coach and personal trainer Jen Thomas. This class provides the variety your body needs to see results by combining fun cardio moves with specific muscle conditioning exercise. Bring a mat and set of dumbbells.


Aug. 31: Hula Hoop Dance Sequence Workout
6:30 p.m. at West Beach

The hula hoop is a versatile tool for everything from fun to fitness and even dance. This workshop will focus on rhythm and movement. Learn a fun hoop dance sequence and unlock a new approach to dance! Quality handmade hoops from Rhythm Hoop Dance will be available for purchase 15 minutes before the start; loaner hoops will also be available.
