HOW IS THE EFFECTIVE DATE ENFORCED?
The enforcement date for the CE requirements is January 1, 2026. This does not mean that all licensees must complete their CE hours by that date. The CE hours must be completed prior to license renewal, so the deadline for completing your hours will depend on your individual license expiration date. Please refer to your license for that information, or you may search your name on the Board’s search engine.
WHO DOES THIS REQUIREMENT APPLY TO?
All licensees under the Board of Cosmetologists are required to complete six hours of approved CE within their renewal period to maintain good standing.
This includes:
- Senior Cosmetologists
- Cosmetologists
- Hairstylists
- Hairstylists – Blowdry
- Estheticians
- Nail Technicians
This requirement applies to everyone who wishes to maintain their license in Maryland, regardless of place of residence.

IS THERE A GRANDFATHER CLAUSE?
There is no grandfather clause—no matter how long you have held your license, this requirement applies to ALL license renewals.
WHAT IS THE COST FOR THESE COURSES?
Many providers offer courses virtually, in person, or both. Costs vary among providers, and it is the responsibility of the licensee to select a provider that fits their needs and resources while meeting the requirements set forth in the legislation.
WHERE CAN I TAKE APPROVED COURSES?
Courses must be taken exclusively from providers that have been approved by the Board. Please use the Approved CE Provider list to locate providers in your area as well as online virtual options to complete these requirements.
