BOARD OF ELECTRICIANS
Update on Journey Waiver Applications
As many people know the new journey waiver period started on July 1, 2022 which allowed anyone with four or more years of experience to obtain their license without testing. Since the start of the waiver period, our Board lost two staff members. Thanks to the effort of the rest of the mechanical licensing staff, we were able to carry on issuing the new license. With the hiring of our new Board Specialist, Jay Brown, we have been able to pick up the pace with the backlog.
Overall, since July 1st we have issued over 5,200 electrical licenses. Of those 2,313 have been for the journeyperson waiver and 2,028 have been for the apprentice license. The reminding have been for a master level license or a reciprocal license. That is an incredible number in such a short period of time considering in the first half of the year we only issued 1,093 total licenses.
The Board would also like to remind everyone when they apply to send their journey certification form to the Board's correct email address. If you send the papers to another email address or by postal mail, that will cause a delay in the process. The application deadline is December 31, 2022.
Board Member Positions Available
Consumer Positions
The Boards of Plumbing and HVACR Contractors are looking for applicants who are interested in serving as consumer members. This position is open to any Maryland citizen who is not licensed by the Board of Plumbing or HVACR Contractors respectively. In addition, the Boards of Certified Interior Designers, Examiners of Landscape Architects, and Professional Engineers are also looking for volunteers to serve as consumer members. This position is open to any Maryland citizen who is not licensed by these boards. Because there are some overlapping areas of interest between the mechanical industries and these professional design industries, like construction, planning, and public safety, these boards may benefit from having consumer members with a background in any of our mechanical industries. The Office of Cemetery Oversight Advisory Council, Real Estate Commission, and Board of Cosmetologists also have openings for consumers, if those industries interest you as well.
As a volunteer board member, you assist with the regulation and governance of one of these professional industries, be it plumbing, HVACR, interior design, landscape architecture, professional engineering, real estate, cosmetology or cemeteries and burial goods. Service on the board provides you with the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the protection of the citizens of Maryland. The Boards of Certified Interior Designers and Examiners of Landscape Architects meet quarterly and the Boards of HVACR Contractors, Plumbing, Cosmetology, and Professional Engineers meet monthly as well as the Real Estate Commission. The Office of Cemetery Oversight meet as needed, generally eight times a year. As a consumer member, you have the opportunity to shape licensing regulations, as well as contributing to the code of ethics, practice and safety standards that ensure consumer protection.
