The Eutaw Café – Back in Business!

Eutaw Café Manager Steve Brand and Clayton Coe from the Office of General Services

Eutaw Café manager Steve Brand is happy to be welcoming Labor employees back to his kitchen after a long hiatus due to the COVID pandemic. The Café, located in the basement of 1100 N. Eutaw St., serves breakfast and lunch fare from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM (kitchen closes at 1:30). In addition to meals, customers can also select from the same delectable assortment of nuts, chips, cookies and sodas they enjoyed before the world temporarily turned upside down.

Steve has always loved to cook, so the Café is a good fit. He says he’s the Chief Cook at home, too. But his favorite part of the job is meeting people and building relationships. On any given day you can find him chatting and joking with customers as they pay for a cup of fresh coffee, wait for their order to be prepared or stare blankly at the wall of snack food choices, struggling with their conscience over which bag of chips will do the least damage to their diet.

From 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., a steady stream of hungry Labor employees cycle through to pick up a hearty classic breakfast of eggs and their choice of meat and bread, or maybe a breakfast sandwich to start the day right. The second rush starts when the lunch menu opens at 11:00 AM. The lunch crowd can satisfy their inner-carnivore with a quarter-pound angus burger or a variety of deli sandwich options and fresh salads.

Steve wants to get the word out that he has plans for a grand opening event for some time in the coming weeks, to celebrate the Café’s return. Stay tuned for more on this exciting event as details become available!

O&P Fellowship

This month, in a tremendous display of sympathy and fellowship, O&P’s customer service center organized a surprise luncheon and school supply drive for Shanell West and her family. Shanell experienced the sudden loss of her husband, Richard Samuel West, Sr. on July 26th. Since she is the mother of three young children preparing to return to school for the new academic year, the customer service center collected donations from O&P staff to stock their backpacks with supplies and help purchase school uniforms.

The photos below are from the surprise luncheon held on August 13th, in which the unit showed their love and support for Shanell and her family. Customer Service Manager Angela Wood described the event in heartfelt words: “My goal was for my team and I to uplift Shanell West and we did that today. She was able to smile, pose for the camera and have good fellowship. In our group picture, everyone touched her shoulder so she could feel our support and know that we’ve got her back.”

Governor's Workforce Development Board

Maryland Project SEARCH

Governor’s Workforce Development Board (GWDB) member Stacey Herman helped organize and host the annual kick-off conference for Maryland Project SEARCH programs on August 19, 2021. Stacey Herman is the Director of Neurodiversity and Community Workforce Development at Kennedy Krieger Institute, where she oversees Kennedy Krieger’s Project SEARCH program. Project SEARCH is an international network of sites with the primary objective of securing competitive employment for people with disabilities. Maryland’s Project SEARCH annual conference, sponsored by the Maryland Department of Disabilities, had 68 attendees from across the state’s 14 program sites.

This virtual event brought together business partners, adult service providers, school program representatives, the Maryland Department of Rehabilitation Services, the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Administration, and leaders of organizations from across Maryland, to network, discuss innovative practices and expand programming opportunities. The keynote event was storytelling by graduates of Maryland’s Project SEARCH programs, who shared their personal stories of employment and empowerment throughout their Project SEARCH journeys. Sean Roy, Chief Training and Innovation Officer at TransCen, Inc., engaged attendees in a lunch-and-learn about family engagement, the employment process and collaboration opportunities for the future. The highlight of the conference was the premiere of a video about the successes and celebrations of Maryland’s Project SEARCH programs.
