Statement of Maryland Comptroller Brooke Lierman on U.S. Senator Ben Cardin’s Announcement That He Will Not Seek Re-election
Comptroller points to senior senator's lifetime of public service, dedication to Chesapeake Bay restoration, unwavering devotion to Baltimore
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (May 2, 2023) - Maryland Comptroller Brooke Lierman today released the following statement regarding the announcement by Maryland’s senior U.S. Senator Ben Cardin that he will not seek re-election upon the conclusion of his term next year.
“When he leaves office, Ben Cardin will have given every moment of his professional life, from before his law school graduation to the day he retires, in service to the people of Maryland. His tremendous record of public service is matched only by his record of effectiveness and his humility in leadership.
“Having served in the same Maryland House of Delegates that Senator Cardin once led as Speaker – with his portrait looking over me – I have continually been awed by his ability to bring people together to get things done. Representing the same East Baltimore communities that once shaped Ben Cardin, I deeply respect that he always held true to his values and stood up for and helped people whenever he could.
“Ben Cardin was one of the first national elected leaders to say aloud that climate change is real and that we needed to build more resilient communities to confront its effects. Cardin helped shape the launch of the Chesapeake Bay Program and fought to ensure its success. He also was unwavering in his support for improved access to health care and promoted the success of Maryland’s small businesses while introducing key financial reforms to make our domestic markets safer. The Magnitsky sanctions that he authored battled corruption and provided much-needed accountability for international human rights abusers. Cardin has championed women’s rights, co-sponsoring the Equal Rights Amendment, and helped improve the treatment of immigrants and returning citizens.
“But at the end of the day, he was always our friend, Ben, unassuming and approachable by all. I count myself lucky to know Ben Cardin (and his wonderful wife, Myrna) and am so grateful for his leadership, guidance, and perseverance throughout the years. Maryland and our nation are better for his service.”
