Comptroller Franchot heads to Western Maryland on Friday where he will present a pair of 2021 William Donald Schaefer Helping People Awards.
First, in Washington County, the Comptroller will recognize APPLES For Children, a private nonprofit resource and referral agency that works with families, providers and community partners to ensure that children have access to high quality, affordable early learning and school-age opportunities and experiences that enable them to succeed in school and life. Executive Director Heather Glass will accept the award on behalf of the organization.
Mr. Franchot will then travel to Frostburg State University, where he will present the Allegany County Helping People Award to the Children's Literature Centre. Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the Centre has been instrumental in promoting literacy through technology and other innovative approaches that focuses specifically on children's books, authors and illustrators. Co-founders Tom Palardy and William Bingman will receive the award.
The William Donald Schaefer Helping People Award was created to honor the legacy of public service exemplified by former Governor, Comptroller and Baltimore City Mayor William Donald Schaefer. One winner is selected annually from each of Maryland's 24 jurisdictions. This is the 10th year that Comptroller Franchot has presented Schaefer awards to worthy recipients throughout Maryland.
