Comptroller Franchot on Saturday morning will present the William Donald Schaefer Helping People Award for Howard County to HoCo Pirate Adventures, which launched during the pandemic and has quickly become a popular family activity that gives proceeds to a different local organization every month.
With the help of his two young children, founder Chris Fuchs creates new adventures every month by leaving clues along local trails, parks and pathways leading to a treasure chest for kids of all ages. The monthly hunts get kids off screens and out into nature, teach educational skills like map reading, puzzle solving, and critical thinking, while giving families a fun way to spend time together.
The Comptroller will then stop by the Columbia Festival of the Arts' Lakefest celebration, a free, three-day annual arts and entertainment festival along Lake Kittamaqundi that features live music, dance and theatrical performances, kids entertainment and crafts, dozens of vendors, workshops and other activities.
