Comptroller Franchot will join state leaders for a virtual press conference marking the start of PROTECT Week (Protecting Older Americans From Financial Exploitation), spotlighting the need for education and outreach on the financial exploitation of vulnerable elder adults. This annual event launched in 2018 and coincides with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15.
Senior victims are often targeted by someone they know. Last year, the FBI reported a 54% increase in elder fraud from 2020. The impact is thought to be much greater, however, since only one in 44 report being victimized.
Speakers will discuss the rapidly evolving schemes exploiting our greatest generation and will share prevention tips, details about shredding events to protect personal information and other precautions.
The press conference will be livestreamed on AARP Maryland's Facebook page and YouTube channel. Visit the PROTECT Week website or the Comptroller of Maryland's Elder Financial Abuse webpage for more information.
