Comptroller Franchot to Present Schaefer Award and Recognize Local Businesses Thursday in Frederick

Second Chances Garage to be honored for helping low-income earners gain access to transportation

WHO:

Comptroller Peter Franchot

WHAT:

Comptroller Franchot will spend Thursday in Frederick beginning with the presentation of the William Donald Schaefer Helping People Award to Second Chances Garage.

The nonprofit, founded by Rick and Cindy Trawick, makes a difference in the community by offering “second chances” for low-income, wage earners to access affordable transportation. Since 2010, Second Chances Garage has provided 279 vehicles to local families.

The Comptroller then will visit Gravel and Grind, where he will present a proclamation to owner Tracy Hathaway. Located in a repurposed 1940s car dealership, the hybrid bike shop and coffeehouse caters to outdoors enthusiasts looking to buy or rent bikes to explore the city’s neighborhoods, parks and trails.

Mr. Franchot next will stop by Spinners Pinball Arcade, where he will present a proclamation to owner Joe Said. The business has more than 70 games including pinball, classic consoles, skeeball, air hockey, foosball and more. The arcade is part of Pinball EDU, a nonprofit that aims to be a fully-inclusive venue for children and adults of all abilities. Mr. Said is a cerifitied autism specialist who believes pinball can be an effective therapy for individuals with sensory disorders.

The Comptroller will conclude his Frederick tour at Tenth Ward Distilling Company, where he will present a proclamation to owner Monica Pearce. Trained in environmental science, Ms. Pearce switched careers and opened her business in 2016 becoming the state's first woman-owned distillery. Tenth Ward offers a variety of year-round spirits and canned cocktails at its vibrant Cocktail Lab.
