Sarah Price, Legislative and Membership Associate, Maryland Retailers Association

WHAT:

Comptroller Franchot this afternoon will help present a $1,000 award to the winner of the Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week Scholarship Contest.

The winning student, who is enrolled at North American Trade Schools in Woodlawn, submitted an Instagram video that was picked from a field of entries highlighting the annual tax-free week in August when qualifying articles of clothing and shoes priced under $100 are exempt from the state's six percent sales tax.

The Maryland Retailers Association has provided the scholarship for five years as a way to incentivize young people to support their local businesses. In past years, the first-place prize has gone to students enrolled at Anne Arundel Community College, Cecil College, Salisbury University and Maryland Institute College of Art.
