Comptroller Franchot will speak this morning at the 150th anniversary and groundbreaking celebration of the B&P Tunnel at the North Portal in Baltimore. Hosted by Amtrak, the event will highlight the B&P Tunnel Replacement Program and the formal naming of the tunnel in honor of renowned abolitionist Frederick Douglass, a Maryland native. The oldest of Amtrak’s tunnels, the B&P Tunnel serves nine million MARC and Amtrak customers annually.
Amtrak CEO Bill Flynn will join federal, state and local elected officials, Maryland Transportation Secretary Greg Slater and Nettie Washington Douglass, the great-great-granddaughter of Frederick Douglass.
Later today, the Comptroller will travel to Severn in Anne Arundel County, where he will present a proclamation to the leadership of Senior Dogs, the state's only dog sanctuary catering exclusively to canines more than six years old. Acting Executive Director Ritchie Brooks will then lead the Comptroller on a tour of the facility, which has 14-full-time staff members, 400 volunteers, a veterinarian technician and a veterinarian who visits once a week. More than 700 senior dogs have been adopted since 2016.
