Comptroller Franchot Virtually Presents Carroll County Schaefer Helping People Award

Pass Love Around's teenage founder Julia LeHew creates, sells pet products to provide school supplies for underprivileged kids

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (July 16, 2020) - Comptroller Peter Franchot has virtually presented the annual William Donald Schaefer Helping People Award for Carroll County to Pass Love Around. Founder Julia LeHew created the nonprofit organization that makes and sells pet products to provide school supplies for underprivileged children in Title 1 schools.

Julia was 11 years old in 2016 when she started Pass Love Around as part of a Girl Scout project, aiming to close the local achievement gap by ensuring all children had access to needed learning tools. It quickly evolved into a nonprofit business that helps several hundred children in Title 1 schools throughout Maryland.  The effort to foster equal access to education embodies the principles that Schaefer, the late Baltimore City mayor, Maryland governor and comptroller, held dear.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, Pass Love Around opened an online store and began producing and selling cloth face masks to help prevent the spread of the disease and to bolster funding for school supply purchases.

The virtual presentation can be viewed here.

Since 2012, Comptroller Franchot has annually traveled to each of Maryland's 24 jurisdictions to honor an individual or organization serving their community. This year, all Schaefer Award presentations will be held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Individual press releases will be sent announcing each of the honorees, along with a link to view the virtual ceremony.
