Comptroller Virtually Presents Montgomery County William Donald Schaefer Helping People Award
Birthday Cakes 4 Free brings smiles to those most in need
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (June 19, 2020) - Comptroller Peter Franchot has virtually presented the annual William Donald Schaefer Helping People Award for Montgomery County to Birthday Cakes 4 Free Co-Founders Robert and Allison Wachen, as well as the hundreds of volunteers that help bake and deliver cakes to underprivileged children and seniors in the region.
Founded in 2015, Birthday Cakes 4 Free combined the Wachens' love of baking with their calling to serve the community. This entirely student-run organization has partnered with local nonprofits like the Greater Washington Boys & Girls Club, Seneca Heights, Shepherd's Table and Interfaith Works to bake and deliver more than 5,000 cakes, embodying the principles that Schaefer, the late Baltimore City mayor, Maryland governor and comptroller, held dear: helping those most in need.
The virtual presentation can be viewed here.
Since 2012, Comptroller Franchot has annually traveled to each of Maryland's 24 jurisdictions to honor an individual or organization serving their community. This year, all Schaefer Award presentations will be held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Individual press releases will be sent announcing each of the honorees, along with a link to view the virtual ceremony.
Comptroller Franchot and his team would like to thank all the nominees for their hard work and commitment to helping and strengthening their communities.
