Reminder: Major Construction Along I-95 in Baltimore City Starts This Weekend

Split traffic patterns will be implemented south of the Ft. McHenry Tunnel;

Delays along I-95 will cause congestion in downtown Baltimore

The Maryland Transportation Authority is scheduled to resume major construction along mainline I-95 and ramps between the Fort McHenry Tunnel and Caton Avenue in Baltimore City.  The $64 million preservation project was launched in March, 2014 and construction will continue through the fall of 2015.

Just like last year, motorists can expect major delays along this stretch of I-95. These delays will impact downtown traffic and southern city communities. Commuters are strongly advised to seek alternate routes into and out of Baltimore City during peak hour travel times.

Split traffic patterns are scheduled to begin this weekend along northbound and southbound I-95:

  • On or about Saturday March 28th southbound I-95 traffic lanes will split after the Fort McHenry Tunnel with two lanes to the left and two to the right.  Commuters heading into Baltimore City via 95 from the north should exit at Key Highway rather than I-395 to avoid traveling through the work zone.  Commuters leaving the city that use Key Highway in order to access I-95 south should enter the interstate further south via I-395 or Russell Street to avoid the construction.
  • On or about Monday March 30th northbound I-95 traffic lanes will split with three lanes to the left and one to the right between Hanover Street and Key Highway. Commuters heading into Baltimore City from the south should use earlier exits such as Caton Avenue, Washington Boulevard or Russell Street rather than I -395 to avoid the work area.  Commuters leaving Baltimore City should access northbound I-95 via Key Highway or points east instead of I-395 to bypass the construction.

These lane splits will remain in effect for approximately 8 weeks.  Traffic patterns along I-95 will change throughout the duration of the project and motorists should be aware of how the construction will affect daily travel.  Work zone speed limits will be reduced to 50 mph and commuters should use caution when driving through these areas.

The I-95 roadwork will cause congestion in downtown Baltimore.  To help facilitate the movement of traffic, DOT will deploy Transportation Enforcement Officers at critical intersections in the downtown area and adjust signal timings as necessary.
